Former Illinois Attorney General Jim Ryan has died at the age of 76.

Ryan was a two-term attorney general who became the Republican nominee for governor in 2002… but who lost to Rod Blagojevich that year… the first Republican to come up short in an Illinois gubernatorial election in 30 years. Ryan ran again in 2010 but lost the GOP nomination to Bill Brady. He had battled cancer for years.

His family says Ryan died at his home Sunday after “several lengthy illnesses.”
