Environmental activists are calling on Ameren to do more to help customers cope with the anticipated summer surge in electricity costs.

Representatives of the Sierra Club, the Citizens Utility Board, and other groups held a rally outside Ameren’s Springfield headquarters this week. Scott Allen with CUB says Ameren needs to make good on pledges to expand energy assistance programs for families that are struggling with their utility bills, and should also increase access to programs that help homeowners improve energy efficiency, which can also lower heating and cooling bills.

Experts say electric bills could go up 50 to 60 dollars a month starting this summer because of peak demand and limits on the supply of electricity.
