Republican candidate for governor Richard Irvin says Democratic incumbent JB Pritzker is to blame for the deaths of 36 veterans in a COVID-19 outbreak at the LaSalle Veterans Home in 2020.

In a rare news conference, Irvin says he’s “sickened” that Pritzker and top public health officials “sat idly by” while the outbreak got steadily worse, and says Pritzker must accept responsibility for the tragedy. Meanwhile, Irvin continues to refuse comment on the leaked draft Supreme Court opinion that could overturn the Roe v. Wade decision on abortion. Irvin says until there is a final decision, it would be “irresponsible” and “speculation” to discuss the issue. But he does say that he supports allowing abortion in cases of rape, incest, and to protect the life and health of the mother.

He also vows to reinstate the parental abortion notification law that was repealed by Pritzker and legislative Democrats.
