Springfield police are alerting area businesses to a new variation on an old phone scam.

Several local businesses have reported calls where the caller instructs an employee to take money from a cash drawer or safe and deposit it into a bitcoin account at another location or use the funds to buy gift cards. The caller may pose as someone from the business’s corporate office, or may be using a “spoofed” number to make it appear that the call is originating from the police department.

Investigators say such calls are almost never legitimate, and urge people who get such a call to contact police or Crimestoppers.
