The family of a Sangamon County jail inmate who died while being subdued by jail guards last year has now filed a wrongful death lawsuit.

The Illinois Times reports the family of Jamieson Cody filed the suit on the one-year anniversary of his death after he was restrained and tasered in the jail in April of 2021. The lawsuit alleges two overweight guards put a combined 700 pounds on Cody’s back as he lay on the ground, restricting his breathing and contributing to his death.

In addition to Sheriff Jack Campbell and jail staff, the lawsuit also names the company that provides medical services in the jail.
