Sangamon County Animal Control is dealing with another outbreak of illness at its animal shelter.

Several dogs have come down with canine parvovirus, a potentially fatal infection. A total of eight dogs at the shelter have contracted the virus… and three have died. The shelter has temporarily suspended adoption of dogs from the shelter until the outbreak is under control.

A cleaning crew has been brought in for a thorough sanitizing of the facility, something which county officials say had already been scheduled even before the outbreak. And veterinarians are recommending that the shelter restrict movement of dogs within and outside the facility… including a suspension of dog walking… to prevent further spread of the virus.
