A lawsuit has been filed in Springfield in an effort to keep a proposed state constitutional amendment off the November ballot.

The Workers’ Rights Amendment would prohibit state or local governments from enacting so-called “right-to-work” laws which could inhibit unionization of workplaces. The amendment calls collective bargaining a “fundamental right” of Illinois workers. But the suit filed last week in Sangamon County Circuit Court by two conservative groups argues that the amendment would violate the U.S. Constitution.

The Liberty Justice Center and the Illinois Policy Institute say the proposal would prevent businesses from acting in their own economic interest.
