The long legal fight between the state of Illinois and the past owners of the former Pillsbury Mills site in Springfield has come to an end.

Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul has announced that the state has entered into consent decrees with the individuals and companies that were involved in a botched cleanup of the site. The state filed suit in 2015, alleging that the defendants improperly handled material containing asbestos at the site, creating a potential public health hazard. The consent decrees prohibit the defendants from having any further involvement with the site, or from committing future violations of state environmental laws. They also impose a $30,000 civil penalty.

The resolution of the legal fight removes another obstacle for the non-profit that now owns the property and is working on a redevelopment plan.
