The Springfield school board has postponed a vote on whether to consolidate three elementary schools into a single new building.

District 186 had already planned to combine Laketown and Hazel Dell schools, but more recently has explored the option of adding Southern View into a combined school that could be built on a tract of land off of 11th Street near the former Fiat-Allis site. Superintendent Jennifer Gill says it would allow the district to replace three aging, smaller schools with a new, larger modern building.

But board members want more time for parents and teachers to weigh in on the pros and cons before a final vote, which is now expected in early May.
