Illinois’ Attorney General is filing a lawsuit against 3M over environmental contamination by so-called “forever chemicals.”

Polyfluoroalkyl substances or PFAS for short are human made chemicals that show up in consumer products like non-stick pans, industrial settings, and even firefighting foams. The lawsuit comes shortly after a report by the Illinois EPA showing a prevalence of PFAS in drinking water over the past couple of years. AG Raoul claims 3M has known how dangerous PFAS have been for decades.

Certain types of PFAS are very toxic to humans, and can be linked to certain types of cancers, impaired kidney function, and low birth weight in babies.
