City Of Springfield, Airport At Odds Over Tax Revenues

The Springfield Airport Authority is considering legal action over hundreds of thousands of dollars in aviation fuel taxes collected by the City of Springfield… money which the airport says should have been turned over to them.

The city has collected more than $800,000 in such taxes since 2004, and Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport says federal law requires that money to be returned to the airport and spent on aviation-related costs. The city, though, says it was not obligated to return the money until a change in state law was made in 2019, and says the money has been going into a state aviation fund since then.

The airport authority meets next week and will discuss next steps in the dispute… including the possibility of hiring a lawyer to take the city to court.
