As people across Central and Southern Illinois begin to repair the damage from last week’s violent weather, state officials are issuing a new reminder urging caution against repair scams.

Attorney General Kwame Raoul notes that so-called “storm chasers” move into storm-impacted areas almost immediately, seeking to pressure homeowners into making quick and costly decisions on repairs, sometimes resulting in substandard work. While general contractors do not have to be licensed in Illinois, other repair specialists, such as roofers, must be.

Officials say you should check the background of workers you hire, get multiple estimates, get contracts in writing, and don’t give in to high-pressure sales tactics.
