How To Carve Your BEST Pumpkin!

unnamed-110
When I was growing up, we would always carve pretty simple jack-o-lanterns. The simple one tooth smile, a triangle for the nose and same for the eyes. I never understood how people could make what they make with pumpkin carvings. It really can be an art.
Growing up, however, we didn’t have any of the necessary information to up our carving game, so I thought we’d share with you some important keys to get you going!

Here are some tips for carving a pumpkin:

Necessary Preparation

Draw your design

Use a pencil or marker to sketch your design on the pumpkin before you start carving. This can help you make better cuts and get the results you want.

Scoop out the guts

Use a pumpkin scoop or large spoon to remove as much of the pumpkin’s guts and seeds as possible. This will help prevent the pumpkin from rotting too quickly and producing a bad smell.

Cut out the lid

If you plan to put a candle in your pumpkin, make sure to cut out the lid at the top so there’s enough oxygen for the candle to burn.

Tips For Better Carving

Use a stencil

You can print out a stencil and tape it to the pumpkin, then use a poker to trace the design.

Carve from the bottom

Carving from the bottom allows you to hold onto the stem and easily slip the pumpkin over a candle or flashlight.

Hold the pumpkin in your lap

Holding the pumpkin in your lap can help you carve it more steadily.

Cover cut surfaces with Vaseline
After carving, cover all cut surfaces with petroleum jelly to help keep the pumpkin moist.
