Sports betting in Illinois is taking off like a running back sprinting for the end zone.

The total amount wagered statewide on sporting events last year skyrocketed to more than $9.3 billion last year, according to the Illinois Gaming Board.

That’s an increase of 39% from 2021. Total revenues generated by those wagers increased almost 38% to around $800 million.

Sports betting first became legal here in 2020, and after being disrupted by the pandemic, the numbers have been climbing steadily ever since.

Illinois now ranks among the top five states in sports betting activity.
