The University of Illinois Springfield has closed on its purchase of the downtown building that will become the new home of the university’s Innovation Center.

The three-story building at Fourth and Washington had belonged to the Illinois Sheriffs’ Association. Purchased for $950,000, the building will eventually house the Innovate Springfield program, labs to create and test product prototypes, workforce development programs, and space for the UIS Center for State Policy and Leadership.

Design work gets underway soon, with renovation expected to begin in 2024 and completion scheduled for 2025.
