Illinois lawmakers have approved changes to the SAFE-T Act that they will hope will end some of the confusion over what will happen when the cash bail system ends on January 1st.

The modifications to the bill include a response to critics who claimed the new law would prohibit police from arresting someone trespassing on private property. The measure spells out that police can indeed arrest a trespasser who may pose a danger to themselves or others, or who refuse to leave even after receiving a citation. The bill also creates a timeline for dealing with current jail inmates who are being held on bail, to allow them to request to be set free after the new law takes effect.

The revisions were pushed through both chambers of the General Assembly Thursday, the final day of the fall veto session.
