A Springfield-area solar farm project will play a major role in Chicago’s new commitment to purchase 100-percent clean, renewable energy by 2025.

As part of its effort to meet that goal, Chicago says it will purchase solar-generated electricity to help power its airports, the Harold Washington Library Center, and other big city facilities. That power will come from the Double Black Diamond solar farm to be built on the Sangamon-Morgan county line.

County board chairman Andy Van Meter says the agreement will make Sangamon County a leading generator of clean solar power, and says the project will mean a big boost in construction and permanent jobs and a substantial increase in tax revenues.
