A public meeting is planned this week to discuss options for a potential new National Park Service site in Springfield commemorating the scene of the 1908 race riots.

The hearing is part of a “special resource study” to determine if the site is eligible and suitable for inclusion in the National Parks system. The site near Madison Street and the 10th Street rail corridor project is where crews working on the train tracks unearthed remnants of the homes destroyed in the racially-motivated violence more than a century ago. The site must meet each of four designated criteria in order to be considered as a unit of the Park Service. Park Service representatives will provide information and answer questions at the meeting, set for Wednesday at 6pm at the NAACP offices at 801 South Eleventh Street.
