Regularly-scheduled mass transit service between Springfield and several outlying communities is coming to an end.

The Sangamon Mass Transit District is suspending the fixed-route service that runs daily from Springfield to Chatham, Riverton, Rochester, and Sherman. SMTD says it is experiencing manpower shortages resulting in mandatory overtime, and says the ridership on those routes is not sufficient to justify that cost.

Residents of those communities can still call SMTD at 217-522-8594, at least 24 hours in advance, to arrange rides. If you tell them that you had used the fixed-route service, you will pay the same one-dollar fare.
