With Springfield facing its biggest snowfall so far this winter, HSHS St. John’s Hospital is reminding people to use caution while walking on snow and ice.

Each winter, hospital emergency rooms see patients suffering from sprains, broken bones, or concussions because of weather-related falls. St. John’s says you should walk slowly and take short strides while walking in winter conditions, and use handrails on steps. Be careful of dark, wet spots on pavement, which could be thin, slippery layers of black ice.

The hospital also recommends trying to keep your hands free and extending your arms while walking to improve balance and your center of gravity.
