Some Central Illinois hospitals say they are at capacity because of the recent surge in COVID-related hospitalizations.

Hospitals in Peoria and Bloomington-Normal say their intensive care units are virtually full… and say the overwhelming majority of COVID patients requiring that level of care are unvaccinated. In Springfield, HSHS St. John’s Hospital did not provide exact capacity numbers, but says that while it still has ICU beds available, the number of COVID inpatients is climbing, most of them unvaccinated.

Springfield Memorial Hospital says its ICU bed capacity is mirroring the situation across Central Illinois, where 90-percent of ICU beds are currently filled.
