New music around the world will now be streamlined, being released on Fridays.
For the past 25 years – Tuesdays have been the day that you could head to your local music shop and pick up your favorite new albums. Monday was new music release day overseas in the United Kingdom.
The recording industry decided in 1989 that Tuesdays would be the standard as every retailer could start selling albums to keep the playing field as fair as possible.
With the invention of digital streaming services, things got a little complicated – somebody living in the UK could buy the album on a Monday and upload to the internet and someone in the US would have the record a day early or people in Australia would have the weekend to upload new music as they get new music on Fridays.
Consumers were asked what day they would most like to receive new music – 68% responded with Friday or Saturday.
The new standard is here – New Music Friday.
