  All Day COAT DRIVE   During the months of December and January, the Rochester Public Library will be holding their annual Coat Drive. Accepted articles for the collection will be new or gently used coats, both children and adults), hats, scarves, and gloves.   All Day Martin Luther King Essay Contest   o celebrate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Ministerial Alliance of Springfield and Vicinity is holding an essay competition for students in grades 5 through 12. The competition is aimed at exposing students to the ideas of Dr. King. Students are asked to write a 300 to 400 word essay that explores a quotation from Dr. King: "He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it." Awards of $700 will be given to the elementary (5th grade), middle school, and high school student whose essay is determined by the judges to be the best in its category. The winning essays will be announced and presented at the annual Ministerial Alliance of Springfield and Vicinity celebration on Jan. 19, 2014 at Union Baptist Church, 1405 East Monroe Street, Springfield. Essays will be accepted until January 13, 2014 and judged by a panel designated by the Ministerial Alliance. Essay Competition Rules and Guidelines: Essay Topic: "He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it." –Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay must be typed: no less than 300 words; no more than 400 words.   8:30AM 5:00PM Figurism: Narrative and Fantastic Figurative Art   Figurism: Narrative and Fantastic Figurative Art brings together historical and contemporary body-based art by over fifty artists from the Illinois State Museum collection. The exhibition emphasizes the power and the range of the narrative and expressive uses of the figure in Midwest art. The artworks were selected to create a better understanding and consideration of different representational styles and the ability of the figure to carry feeling, memory, and experience. They were also selected with an eye toward something fantastic—a heightened sense of the super-real or super-natural—whether through aggressive, expressive form, high-keyed color, inventive graphics, or ambiguous situations. The Museum is open from 8:30-5:00 Monday through Saturday and from 12:00-5:00 on Sunday. Admission is free. Parking is available nearby and the building is ADA accessible.   5:00PM 8:00PM Indian Lore Badge Workshop   Boy scouts can earn all of their requirements for an Indian Lore Badge at the Rock Springs Nature Center on Thursday, January 9 from 5-8pm. Scouts ages 10 and up will research Native American leaders, make clothing, and learn traditional games to earn this badge. Fee is $12 per scout. Reservations are required by noon on January 8. To get to Rock Springs from Decatur, go south on Route 48 and turn west onto Rock Springs Road or go south on Wyckles Road and turn east onto Rock Springs Road. Watch for signs.   6:00PM 8:00PM Starting Your Business in Illinois   The Illnois Small Business Development Center (ISBDC) at Lincoln Land Community College (LLCC) is conducting "Starting Your Business in Illinois" workshops in January for prospective business owners. The free workshop is available in Springfield and Jacksonville. Workshop topics include preparing a business plan, financing a business, legal forms (proprietorship, partnership, corporation), registering a business name and taxes.
