Girls on the Run Announces Community 5k Event |
|
Registration is open for the Girls on the Run 5k event. This non-competitive walk/run sponsored by Girls on the Run (GOTR) of Central Illinois is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, May 19th, 2012, at Washington Park in Springfield, Illinois. Memorial Health System is the presenting sponsor for this event.
The event is open to the entire community. Family, friends and community supporters of all ages and abilities are encouraged to register to run or walk the course with the girls.
The event begins with a family-friendly festival that includes face and hair painting, fun activities, and photo opportunities. All entrants who register by May 4th are guaranteed a t-shirt. Medals will be distributed at the finish line to all finishers. Post-race activities will take place until noon on race day.
Online registration (www.gotrcentralillinois.org) is encouraged. Early online registration is $25 per person through May 4th. Late online registration is $30. Paper registration is $30 per person. Participants may register the day of the event for $35, cash or check only. Proceeds benefit GOTR of Central Illinois. GOTR participants, coaches and running buddies do not need to register.

Skin Cancer Screening Appointments Available |
|
May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and the Regional Cancer Partnership of Illinois (RCPIL) will provide free skin cancer screenings 4 - 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 17. Skin checks, including moles, will be performed by local dermatologists during the screening at Simmons Cancer Institute at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, 315 W. Carpenter St., Springfield.
Appointments are open to individuals who are not under the care of a dermatologist. Call 217-545-7296 weekdays for an appointment. Limited space is available.

Capital Elite Storm's Senior 5 "Thunder" All-Star Cheerleading Squad will be holding a runway fashion show at J. Parsons in Springfield at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 22nd. J. Parsons is kindly donating 15% of all sales between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. that day towards the squad's upcoming trip to Cheerleading Worlds. Come watch, shop and support your Thunder Girls and help make their dreams come true! Worlds is an epic achievement for any competitive cheerleader, and CEA is the first gym from downstate Illinois to win a bid to this prestigious event in Orlando, Florida later this month. |

Start of Nation Crime Victim's Week |

To commemorate this very special event, the following activities are being held in partnership with Southwind Park and Erin’s Pavilion. If you are interested in promoting your services and providing information/resources to victims of crime, please contact Amie Loman (Amie.Loman@ic.fbi.gov) by Thursday, April 19th.
· FBI Citizens’ Academy is sponsoring a 5K Run/Walk/Roll dubbed “Run for YOUR Rights”. To register, go to www.timingiseverything.com. Cost is $20 per person or $50 for families of 3 or more. FREE t-shirts and finisher’s medals….We’d love to see you walk, run, or roll across the finish line!
· The Illinois Victim Assistance Network and Marsy’s Law for Illinois are sponsoring a Victims’ Rights Rally with nationally recognized special guest speaker Bill Jenkins, author of What to do When the Police Leave. Free refreshments provided.
· Touching dedication ceremony at the site of the Crime Victims’ Memorial Peace Garden. Come help us grow this garden into something meaningful for victims of crime!
All events begin at 12 noon and take place at Southwind Park in Springfield.
