Attacks on Prison Guards and Staffers on the Rise

Attacks on prison guards and staffers are on the increase…and the union representing them says department policies are adding to the risk.

AFSCME Council 31 director Roberta Lynch accuses the Department of Corrections of reclassifying dangerous offenders so that they can be moved to lower-security prisons, where it costs less to incarcerate them.

Lynch says prisons need more staff, better equipment, and the support of management to crack down on inmates who assault staffers.
