Rachel Dolezal – former leader of the NAACP in Spokane, Washington appeared on The Today Show and identified herself as an African American.
Dolezal says that she began identifying herself as black as early as five years-old, telling Matt Lauer when she would draw self portraits as a child she would use a brown crayon instead of a peach one.
She is adamant that she never altered her appearance – or donned ‘blackface’ – to pass as an African American.
I don’t put on black-face as a performance … I certainly don’t stay out of the sun.
Dolezal was joined during the interview by two of her sons, Isaiah & Franklin – who say they identify her “culturally” as black.
